family entertainment / recommended places to visit
Enjoy the therapeutic spa
Many locals and tourists alike come to enjoy these hot springs that are around 50oC. The spa is famous for aiding health problems such as skin problems, arthritic conditions, throat and respiratory infections. It is recommended that you remain immersed in the waters for the most beneficial affect. The spa is at Moulay Yacoub on the outskirts of Fez, which is approximately 300 kms distance, so we would recommend a 2 day trip.
Saadian Tombs
The tombs are a popular sightseeing attraction in Marrakech as they were only recently discovered, before the 1stWorld War and they have been restored. There is a mausoleum which contains the entombed Saadi Dynasty people including those of the family of Ahmad al-Mansur. There are 3 rooms inside the tomb, one of which has twelve columns and has the son of the Sultan's tomb which is carved within cedar wood. The Italian marbled graves are spellbinding. In the outside garden there are graves of soldiers and servants who served the Sultan.
Ben Youssef Madrasa
This was an Islamic college and was founded during the period of the Marinid Sultan Abu al-Hassan. It houses some exclusive and delightful artwork, inscriptions and carvings and the dormitory has been ornately carved from marble, cedar and stucco. In its day it probably had as many as 900 students and one of its well known teachers was Mohammed al-Ifrani.
Tour the Museums
Marrakech has an abundance of museums where you can learn about Morocco's history in great detail. Dar Si Saïd Museum, Marrakech Museum, Bert Flint Museum at Maison Tiskiwin and the Islamic Art Museum at the Majorelle Gardens. So as you see, there is plenty of museum hopping you can do in Marrakech.
Take a trip to the Sahara Desert
You can take an organised excursion, hire a 4 x 4 yourself or take acamel ride for a bouncy trip across the sand dunes and into the Sahara Desert. Either way you will find it a thrilling adventure you won't be able to forget.
The Koutoubia Mosque
This mosque is rather unique in that its Minaret is 69 m high, and as you approach it you will see the 4 towers, which were once built in gold so legend says, but now they are copper. It has rooms inside the mosque which are all elaborately decorated.
The Menara Gardens
With views of the Atlas Mountains behind them, the gardens look picturesque just like a picture postcard. There is a small man made pond which have olive trees and orchards around it. There is a small pavilion which was built during the middle ages and was a summer home for sultan Abderrahmane of Morocco. The gardens are very tranquil and serene. Marrakech has no less than 11 public gardens, so you have plenty of opportunity to chill out.
