family entertainment / recommended places to visit

Go to a water park

The Aqualand Costa Adeje waterpark and dolphinarium is on the Costa Adeje area of Playa de la Americas.Try out the kamakaze, foam, and slower lazy river type slides and rides and enjoy the thrills and spills of the wave machines. There are plenty of great facilities within the park with a good selection of restaurants and cafes. On busy days head for the popular slides during the daily dolphin shows to beat the queues.

See the wonderful gardens

Beautiful gardens are plentiful in Tenerife and the Jardins del Atlantic are a great way to spend a couple of hours amongst rare and exotic plants and shrubs. Located just outside Los Cristianos, the garden visit includes a guided tour and a visit to a banana plantation. The Botanical Gardens in Puerto de la Cruz features sub-tropical and rare plants and are well worth a visit. The Cactus Park at Los Cristianos specializes in desert cacti and plant life and houses some very strange formations of plant. There is also an animal park here which is home to a variety of species from marmosets to terrapins that thrive in their natural habitat.

Horseback Riding

Horse riding is the perfect way to explore hidden Tenerifefor beginners, intermediates and experts alike, with loads of fresh air, gorgeous countryside and numerous medieval villages to happen upon. Most destinations have local riding schools for all ages.

Diving and snorkelling

Scuba diving in Tenerife is the ideal way to discover the amazing world under the sea abundant with marine wonders. The extensive shoreline of this coastline is blessed with the moderate climate, warm water temperature and a seabed full of life. Combining both adventure and discovery, diving promotes awareness about nature conservation. The underwater flora and fauna in striking shapes and hues cast a magical spell on scuba divers.

Water Sports

Most people come to Tenerife to swim in the sea and bathe on the myriad of glorious beaches and most of them have an excellent range of activities available. Traditional water sports such as jet-skiing, waterskiing, banana boating and pedalloes can be found at most established resorts, while scuba diving and deep-sea fishing are also popular.

See some natural beauty

Mount Teide is an awesome sight and can be seen from almost any part of the island. It forms part of the national park and visitors can scale its lofty heights via an impressive if scary cable car which rises dramatically from the pine forests at its foot to the highest snow capped peak. Staggering views can be seen across the island and to sea and the lunar landscape, glittering volcanic ash and sands and imposing rock formations gather below. There are visits to the Parque Nacional Las Canadas de Teide available at sunset to watch the stars - one for the romantics perhaps. Take a jacket as the temperatures here are much lower than those at ground level.

Roque Chinchado's natural phenomenon

Why not explore these landscapes, created thousands of years ago, a little further and take in the Roque Chinchado formation at Los Roques de Garcia, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Tenerife. Take a car or bus tour or walk the specially designed pathways in the area which guide you through routes created by ancient lava flows from the volcano.

The Monkey Park

There are plenty of cheeky monkeys at Tenerife's popular Monkey Park - a great day out for all the family and suitable for all ages. Here the animals are happy and well cared for and they thrive in a natural environment. It is possible to sit with the lemur and spider monkeys, feed and stroke them. Chimps, baboons and gibbons are all here to greet you along with some other friends - a crocodile, a black leopard and many different exotic birds are also living here.

See some wildlife

If bird life takes your fancy then head for Loro Parque - the magnificent bird park which is home to all sorts of fabulous and rare species and other wildlife including dolphins. It is the largest parrot park in the world and has Europe's largest dolphinarium. It is visited by around 1.3million people a year. The park is more like a zoo with wide green open spaces. Parrots, a white tiger, black jaguar and sealion, dolphin and parrot shows are all available to admire here and an amazing aquarium is home to sharks, rays and tropical fish. It's a popular place and is well advertised around all the major resorts so try to head there early and beat the crowds.
