Zante Town has seen many changes to its architecture since the earthquake which destroyed much of the Island, in 1953. Much of it has been rebuilt with modern buildings which give little character to the capital town.
That said, Solomos Square is a popular attraction for holiday makers and here you will find some traditional charm and atmosphere. There is a large statue of Solomos which is a popular photographic image, and in case you didn't know, Solomos wrote the Greek national anthem.
Walking around the town you will see small narrow streets, which lead to shopping malls with shops in abundance. Everything is here from perfumeries, leather ware shops, jewellers, ceramic shops and some trendy designer (and pricey) boutiques. You can also find camera batteries, an internet café and pretty much everything you might need for your holiday and of course, there are always the souvenir shops and gift shops.
There is a good variety of restaurants, tavernas and eateries but expect prices to be a little higher here than some of the less busy resorts. Nightlife
For sightseeing you can visit the museums and churches, Zante Town has its fair share of these which managed to remain reasonably intact after the earthquake of 1953:
The church of Agios Nicholas which was built around 1561 and has had much restoration in recent years.
The Church of Agios Dionysius which has some spectacular night time illuminations.
Zante town has a port which is busy with ferries to and from other Greek Islands and there is a ferry operator which runs a route to Italy.
