Travel Guide

Joyful by name and joyful by nature, the town of Villajoyosa has colour, excitement and captures the imagination of every visitor to pass through its pretty streets.

The name Villajoyosa in Catalan means, the joyful town, and you will certainly feel happy wandering through beautiful squares and pausing to people watch in this sunny location. In fact, one of the town's major incomes comes from a food that always makes you happy - chocolate!

There is even a museum here dedicated the tastes and types of chocolate and sampling these fine creations are always encouraged!

You are bound to find your way back to this town one day (if not for the chocolate) guided by the vividly painted houses which border the seafront as did the fishermen who once relied on their warming colours to guide them back home from sea years ago.

A must is to explore the town which was home to happy fishermen. Bursting with character this 'joyful town' is a location you will always remember vividly.

Indeed, the vivid colours of the matchbox size tiny houses that crowd along one half of the seafront, still painted in bright, gaudy colours, were originally painted so to help returning fisherman find their way home!

History and storytelling is strong here and the village has a wealth of fascinating architecture to explore.

Stroll through the pretty streets which have been lovingly restored to their former glory and marvel at the elaborate doorways of the imposing gothic church which mark the entrance to the old walled centre. The 16th century watch-tower is worth a peek. It once provided a vital function - to warn against attacks from Berber pirates who roamed the coastline.

Cross over the towns bridges built in roman times to the busy market in the centre of the old town, selling handmade produce, locally made gifts and artifacts.

By far the most impressive museum to ever have been created lies here in Villajoyosa - bringing joy through the simplest of pleasures - chocolate!

The Museum of Chocolate has samples on offer to taste - simply divine!

Or if fish is more to your fancy, try out the fish market selling the daily catch on the mouth of the river.

Once you've sampled the seafood and your tummy is full of chocolate, chill out for a while on the sandy beach and dream of pirates, fishermen and yes, more chocolate!
