Rethymnon has a mixture of everything: a good combination of what you are expecting from a holiday destination.
Firstly the town centre is an architectural dream with ancient and modern buildings standing alongside each other amongst the narrow, cobbled roads. The town is built within the walls of the old Venetian Fortress, creating a wonderful atmosphere as you enter.
There is a good variety of boutiques, jewellery shops, perfumeries and department stores where you are bound to spend some time. As you walk around some of its streets you will find some traditional shops amongst the modern retailers. There is also a good weekly market which sells local produce such as herbs, leather, and linen.
Around the old harbour front there are some tavernas and cafes. Little fishing boats bobbing up and down, the area oozes atmosphere and charm.
There are plenty of historical things to see from the Byzantine churches, to the ancient archaeological ruins. The two monasteries Toplou and Preveli attracts many tourists each year as does the Historical Museum and the Archaeological Museum.
There are some good clubs and bars in Rethymnon which are lively and will keep you entertained until the early hours, such as the Rock Café and the Jukebox. The music will get you on your feet and you'll be dancing the night away.
Rethymnon is a lively resort which suits families, couples and singles.
