Travel Guide

Monastir is a town with two personalities: the old town which has a large Arabic influence and the modern part of town with its trendy marina, restaurants and small cafes. The restaurants serve menus both traditionally Tunisian and international.

The olden part of town has 9th century walls and a tower called Ribat which is particularly famous as it was a fortress built for warrior monks. The deceased leader of Tunisia, Bourguiba is laid to rest in a luxurious, mosque-like building in the cemetery. Another interesting place to learn about the history of Tunisia is the Town's museum, and after that why not take a stroll along the medina to look at the wares in the bazaar?

The beach at Monastir is superbly clean and has a good variety of water sports. It is only a short walk from the town centre and there are ample places to buy snacks and drinks. The views are stunning with olive and pine groves in the distance against the ever turquoise sea, which is warm and shallow.

Monastir is a perfect blend of modern with old, with enough to do if you want to be busy, or equally relaxing if you don't.
