If you are looking for a holiday place to go with sun, history and charm then you will find it at Mahon. A Capital City full of buzzing activity and charisma, which you should not miss during your holiday.
Mahon has been the capital city of Menorca since 1721 and visiting Mahon is a pure delight. Walking around the narrow streets, looking at the different kinds of architectural buildings will leave you in awe. It is particularly worth mentioning the public library building, a place which draws visitors each year because it is housed in an 18th century mansion. Another historical building is the Arch de San Roque which was once part of a wall that surrounded the City, and today it is just the Arch that remains. There is the Town Hall and the Church of Santa Maria and if you visit the church don't forget to look at the fantastic organ which has over 3000 pipes.
As well as the historical buildings, you will find plenty of shops to browse in, and spend some of your holiday money. There is a pedestrianised street for shopping with a selection of fine designer boutiques, craft shops, leather goods and souvenir shops. For a wider choice, why not visit the port where you will find a range of exclusive shops where you can take your time to browsing in a relaxing, gentle atmosphere.
There is a market in the old convent building where you may be able to find that little bargain you've been looking for. You will find a variety of products to buy. A particular product that Mahon is well known for is its locally produced cheese, of the same name.
And, now we should mention the Port. Possibly the deepest, natural port in the world (or so the Menorcans people say). There are a variety of shops for you to wander around, during the day, and soak up the laid back atmosphere. There are some market stalls to browse in and plenty of places to stop off for a coffee, or some other beverage of your choice. The restaurants are very good and reasonably priced where you can choose locally caught fish of the day.
At night Mahon comes to life, with its variety of waterfront bars and restaurants buzzing with activity. The old streets also contain many places to eat and drink, you will be certain to find somewhere to suit your taste.
