Being the capital of Gran Canaria, Las Palmas has everything you would expect from its status. It is situated only 20 kms from the airport, to the north of the island and here you will find a diverse group of nationalities. It is only 90 minutes away from the coast of Africa, so the African influences here are wonderful.
It is a city steeped with architectural designs and culture. You will walk around the narrow streets and be astonished with the mixture of ancient and modern buildings, many of the historical buildings have been protected and are now historical monuments.
There are also many shops and businesses making Las Palmas, and Triana (its nearby neighbour of the same municipality) very cosmopolitan and popular. You will find a good selection of shops to suit every taste and the main street in Las Palmas is pedestrianised, to enable safe browsing without worry of traffic to spoil your fun. There are also some other commercial centres, these are Avenida Mesa Y Lopez and El Muelle.
For sight seeing you will revel in the delights of some of its attractions, such as the Museum Canario, the Centre of Modern Art and the Cathedral of Las Palmas.
You might enjoy spending some time strolling around the port, where if you are lucky you might see one of the grand ships that sometimes passes through. There are some street side bars and cafes where you can sit and just watch life go by.
Las Palmas does contain some beaches, particularly Las Canteras which is an idyllic lagoon protected by natural reefs, making it ideal for scuba diving, snorkelling or indeed, just swimming. There are a variety of water sports available if you wish to do more than just relax, here you will find something to suit your taste.
