Georgioupolis has managed to retain its traditional charm and atmosphere, despite being a popular resort amongst tourists. Its village centre has one of those original and quaint village squares which are adorned with eucalyptus and pine trees. The village was once a working fishing village, these days you might still see one of the small fishing vessels in the harbour, or a fisherman bringing in his catch.
It has a long and sandy beach with lots of water sports facilities, along with ice cream booths where you can also buy drinks and snacks. The sea is warm and shallow making it ideal and safe for children. This is a popular resort and offers sun beds, parasols and is ideal for swimming and sunbathing, but can be subject to the summer breezes, the meltemia. Accommodation is available and there are tavernas, restaurants and cafes. There is a public bus service directly from Chania which is fairly frequent.
There are some pleasant walks along one of the 3 rivers in this area as well as Kournas Lake, a unique freshwater river, the only one you will find on Crete. You can swim in the lake if you wish, after a stroll to the river you might be in need of cooling off. The lake is called a sweet waterlake, because the water is fresh. There is a pleasant taverna where you can sit outside and enjoy the view of the White Mountains.
Back to the village centre you will find plenty of good restaurants serving a variety of dishes to suit all tastes. There is always plenty going on in the village square, it is easy to while away some time peoplewatching. There are a few shops catering for tourists needs, such as gifts and souvenir shops.
Nightlife is quite busy here ranging from discos and clubs, to the more sedate tavernas and restaurants. You will be sure to find something to suit all tastes.
