The town of Essaouira has heaps of history with its 18th century walls. There are some art galleries with some fine Moroccan art. It has many little alleyways leading off into shaded squares where you can stop off for a coffee and watch life going on.
Life is fairly laid back in Essaouira, but something relaxing to look at if you are lucky enough to see it is the goats of Essaouira take great pleasure in climbing the Argan trees which only grow here, presumably to eat the nuts.
The beach is fantastic for surfing so surf enthusiasts will be in their element. It lies on the North African Atlantic Coast which affords it some delightful views and crashing waves. Visit the port area for a taste of modern Moroccan life and look at some luxury yachts. If you are feeling adventurous you can take a camel ride along the beach or, for even more of a buzz how about riding a quad bike or a 4 x 4 in the Atlas Mountains.
When you feel like some browsing, window shopping or buying some souvenirs you can take yourself off to one of the souks and search the ware, whilst enjoying the sights, sounds and smells. The atmosphere is magical.
The people of Essaouira are friendly and welcoming and if you are here when the annual Gnawa Festival is held, you will find it a fantastic event for all ages.
