Chania could not be located in a more ideal position. It is situated to the western side of Crete, surrounded by the Cretan Sea to the north, the Ionian Sea to the west and the Libyan Sea to the south.
It is also positioned amongst the mountains of Lefka Ori, or the White Mountains as they are more usually called. The views are magnificent whichever way you look, you are surrounded by views.
The old town of Chania is an amazing variety of architecture. The different type of architectural buildings, with its Byzantine Churches, ruins of fortifications, its Venetian quarters which change the style completely, and it has Ottomon mosques and some castles. There are some important buildings which were left by the Venetians, for instance the impressive lighthouse at the Harbour which dates back to the 16th century. In the Venetian quarter there are narrow cobbled streets, and the ancient Governors residence known as the Kastelli.
The harbour is a trendy area which has numerous tavernas and modern bars. There are many shops and restaurants where you can try out some of Crete's delicious fish menus.
There are a few places to visit whilst you are here: Chania has the ancient Municipal Garden which is now a small zoo, which gives you somewhere to take the children so they can take some time to look at the animals and burn off some energy. Visiting the Samaria Gorge is easy and a worthwhile experience, Chania has several deep gorges and ravines where lovers of nature will enjoy the fauna and wildlife.
