Travel Guide

Picture yourself looking at a beautiful bay with azure blue calm seas and a sky to match, and you will be thinking of Aghios Nikolaos. There is so much to do here; you might not another place on Crete the whole time you are here!

If you believe legends it is said that Aghios Nikolaos has a bottomless lakeand if you peer into the clear waters within it you might agree. There is a lot of Greek Mythology about the lake, as it is said that it is the place where the goddess Athena used to take her bath. A walk around the lake is pleasant on a warm day or evening and it has a number of places to sit, outside and watch the sun go down with a cooling sun downer.

The beach is sandy and the sea is wonderfully warm and clear. During the day life is centered around the beach where you will find many water sports on offer. Beach facilities are good, there are plenty of snack bars and cafes to get something to cool you down and not forgetting that all important ice cream.

There is a lot to do at Agios Nikolaos besides the beach, there is a lake which is well worth a visit and a harbour which can sometimes have some spectacular yachts moored. There is a small Lagoon at Lake Voulismeni and several small beaches within the town. The lagoon has a small park and trail, traditional fishing vessels, take some bread to feed the ducks.

Aghios Nikoaos has a very lively atmosphere and is popular with young couples and families.

Into the centre of the city you will find a splendid array of architecture, ancient buildings mixing by stark comparison with modern. There are some shops to do some browsing where you will find a variety of things being sold, including jewellery and ceramics. In the town itself there are a great range of shops mixed in with some wonderful architecture.

At the port you will find a combination of luxury yachts fishing boats moored together and where tour boats sail off to the Venetian fortress of Spinalonga.

For sightseeing there are some caves and gorges to visit to provide a taste of ancient Crete. There are many archaeological sites where you can spend some time enjoying relics of the past. There is also a very good Archaeological Museum where excavations from around the Town of Lassithi are displayed.

In the summer Agios Nikolaos is a high spot on the cultural scene with music and dance events, theatrical performances, exhibitions, and shows taking place.

You won't be disappointed if you choose Agios Nikolaos as your holiday destination for its atmosphere, its beach and its culture.
